Thanks to everyone who came out to the first opinion meeting of the year and the Gateway open house! It was great to meet new peeps and reconnect with the veteran volunteers. It's only the beginning of a fantastic year to come.I have some pitches leftover from the Opinion meeting, so please let me know by replying to this email if you're interested in taking a pitch! Nike shoes burn on social media as Colin Kaepernick features in ‘Just Do It’ campaign

Oops. People are really mad about this and are

 their Nike shoes (that they already bought) in boycott of this decision. Seems silly, doesn't it? Nike must be in the right on this one (but don't they still use child labour, like, a lot?)

Teasing out the complexities of this would make for a fantastic column.

Would it make sense for Alberta to leave Confederation?

Someone wrote in an interesting

to the Edmonton Journal advocating for Alberta to separate from Canada and become their own country. Would this actually work? 

A thought-experiment column about the feasibility of this would be entertaining. A satirical take on the Independent Republic of Alberta and how fantastic (or terrible) it would be would also be equally, if not more entertaining.  

Ontario gov requiring universities to create free-speech policies

If they don't do it by a certain date, the Ontario gov will cut funding to those universities who fail to meet the deadline. There's a lot of debate about if this would secure free speech on campus or blur the lines between free speech and hate speech. More info

This is the

 I have ever seen. Doing regular checks for prostate cancer is super important, of course, but is this ad campaign going to be effective? Why or why not? 

Five sexual harassment investigations involving faculty ‘ongoing’ at the University of Manitoba

The names of the professors under investigation have 

, which has students extremely concerned for their safety. Is the U of M in the right to keep the names of these profs under wraps while the investigation is ongoing?
