Opinion pitches nov 21

Pitches picked just for you!

Here's some post-reading week goodness

Welcome back, everyone! I hope you all had a restful, relaxing, and fun reading week! It's time to get back into the groove of things and get this bread!Next week, we're having our Getaway meeting on Tuesday, November 27 at 5pm, right after the opinion meeting! The Getaway is a satirical version of The Gateway (think something like The Onion or Clickhole) that we publish at the end of the term. During the meeting, we'll brainstorm article ideas and take pitches to write on, and have a ton of goofs, gaffs, and laughs. It's a ton of fun and there'll be free pizza, so be there or be square! And now, pitches. If you want to snag one, please email me with a short but detailed outline regarding what angle you want to take on the piece and how you want to argue it. First drafts are due, as always, on Friday at 5pm! Cheers!

Think tank calls for more private school enrollment in Alberta

Same pitch as last week.

The think tank argues that there should be increasing enrollment in these schools in order to break what they see as a "monopoly" by teachers' associations on children's education in Alberta.

There may be indeed a kind of "monopoly" on curriculum in public schools, but is this monopoly really so bad for students?

Alberta Party releases postsecondary policy:

The Alberta Party had a policy convention a little while ago and added a few things to their policy book, including

for tuition that are seemingly more left-wing than the NDP's controls found in Bill 19.

While stuff in the policy book won't necessarily make it onto their election platform, it's an interesting move by the Alberta Party.

New Dean of Students initiative hopes to help students navigate mental health services

The Dean of Students has created the

, service which consists of two social workers and two student affairs generalists. Students can talk to these workers about their concerns and get referred to specific resources, whether they be for mental health or tutoring.

The initiative is designed to help students avoid frustration with seeking out resources from big databases, among other things.
