Hey all!Thanks to all who were able to attend yesterday's meeting! It was great seeing you all again!Next week, I'll be doing a presentation on pitching stories to editors! I'm hoping that it will help you folks feel more comfortable in pitching stories to me you'd like to write, as well as helping you find interesting and compelling angles to those takes.I also want to let you guys know that we're doing a Winter Semester Open House next week at 5pm on Tuesday, January 15, after the opinion meeting! Come on by to hang out with volunteers, staff, and eat from free food! If you haven't been to the office yet, come on by! If you know friends who are curious about the work we do, bring them along! Yellow vest protests in Edmonton and abroad

Emerging in a sort of memetic response to the yellow vest protests in France, yellow vest protests in Canada have been popping up in several Canadian cities. Their political talking points centre on anti-immigration, anti-carbon tax, anti-Trudeau, and pro-pipeline rhetoric. 

Yellow vests have clashed with counterprotestors, not resulting in any injuries but coming pretty close to open violence. While the group isn't explicitly far right, white nationalist groups such as the Soldier of Odin have been sighted at yellow vest protests. 

It would be interesting to break down the yellow vest movement in relation to the one in France, using some of the

as examples.

Rancher refusing to pay carbon tax until pipeline is built 

Alberta rancher Sheila Griffith is

the carbon tax on her propane bill until the Alberta government makes progress on the Trans Mountain pipeline. 

Griffith primarily heats her home via natural gas and has been paying the carbon tax on her bill since the tax was introduced. This is her form of protest to the AB government.
