Up and running!

Hi everyone! I hope you all have been having a fantastic summer. To everyone who has volunteered with the Gateway in the past, welcome back! To our new volunteers for whom this is your first pitch email, thanks for signing up for our email list and I can't wait to hear your awesome ideas!I'm Mitchell, the new Opinion Editor, taking over from the amazing Payton. All you really need to know about me is that I'm obsessed with politics, pop culture, and writing for the Gateway, so I'm looking forward to a great year of getting to work with all of you!For new volunteers, the Opinion section is where our writers provide commentary on a variety of topics, such as campus events, politics, or sports. Whether it's writing about how funding cuts are threatening the U of A or simply debating if White Claw is overhyped, it's all welcome in the Opinion section. Make sure to keep an eye on our Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to see the latest articles that we publish. Given the developing situation with COVID-19, things will obviously be a bit different this year. Luckily, the pandemic won't slow us down, as writing for the Gateway is very quarantine-friendly! We can write from the comfort of our own homes and our Slack makes it easier for us to stay connected with each other. For those who aren't a part of our Slack yet, let me know and I'd be happy to add you!As always, we have an assortment of pitches for the week. If you want to write one of the articles in this email, just reply letting me know which one you would like and what your take on it is. Alternatively, If you have a pitch of your own, I'd love to hear it! Send me an email at [email protected].

This page, along with an anti-mask rally held outside the Alberta Legislature last week, highlights the issue of "COVIDiots" in our own community. A good angle to approach this from would be discussing the effects that these movements have on others who do follow the precautions in place around COVID.

Edmonton selected as Hub City for NHL

As many of you have likely heard, Edmonton and Toronto were selected by the NHL to be hub cities, meaning that Western Conference teams will be playing their games here. While many expect the hub city decision to boost the local economy, others are concerned that the decision might result in more COVID-19 cases. Share your take on the decision!

Marble pedestal: Minimum wage workers

As the economy reopens, many people working in coffee shops, grocery stores, or resturants are trying to do their job while minimizing their potential exposure to COVID. On top of the usual rude customers, they now must also deal with new challenges, such as those who refuse to wear masks. Take this column as a chance to uplift and praise these workers during this tough time!
