News pitches

news writing is fun :)

Interested in taking a story this week?

I know school is starting to pick up but we still need news content, so please shoot me an email if any of the stories below appeal to you! Thanks news team :)Also, the lovely Jamie Sarkonak (our current editor-in-chief and last year's news editor) will be doing a workshop for the campus radio station CJSR (SUB 0-3) on September 30 from 1 - 3 pm. The workshop is on how to find stories, which is such an important topic. If you go then maybe you can pitch me a story!Sofia

Faculty of Phys Ed and Rec name change

Today General Faculties Council voted to change the name of the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation to the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation to reflect the fact that the faculty doesn't just educate future P.E. teachers. Apparently we're one of the last universities to make this change. Talk to the Dean of the faculty about the name change (this is an important institutional story!!)

Back stiffness research

A team of U of A researchers have created an instrument for measuring back stiffness. Apparently back stiffness might be mostly in our heads, and is actually the brain trying to protect us from further injury. This is an important topic since back stiffness affects so many people (including me right now hahaha), so talk to the researchers about their work.

Profile Ray Dagg

Ray Dagg is the really nice LRT station custodian with the colourful hair. He also does a lot of cool photography and posts his pictures on Overheard. I think it'd be really cool to find out more about him! (This could go in the magazine!!)

Student Uber drivers

I think it'd be interesting to find a few students who drive Ubers and talk to them about their experiences. The gig economy may be our future but it's definitely controversial.

Profile the therapeutic music group

The student group performs at nursing homes biweekly. You could go with them one week and interview them and maybe some of the seniors about the power of music.
