Happy Reading Week News Team!
Hi News Team! We've finally made it to Reading week! Huzzah!
Happy Reading Week everybody!!! Please take some time this week to relax and enjoy the time off! Do some self-care, do a virtual/ socially-distant hang out with friends, sleep in till 1 pm— just make sure to spend some time doing things that bring you joy!
Since it's reading week, there will be no meeting next Monday! As I said, enjoy your break! I'll be using reading week to come up with some new presentations/ workshops for the rest of the semester, so if you have any suggestions of a topic you would like me to cover, send me a message!
Though there is not a meeting next week, you can still take a pitch for the week! Also, if any of you want to meet to discuss anything, whether news-related or not, don't be afraid to reach out and we can arrange a Zoom meeting! If you are a new/newer volunteer and want to spend some time going over news structure and whatnot, reading week is a great opportunity to do so!
For those of you interested in taking a story over the break, here are some pitches:
The student group Students Invested in Health Association is finally ready to put up their menstrual product dispenser!
Local startup founded by U of A graduates teaches basics of programming in more than 30 Edmonton-area schools!
168 Golden Bears and Pandas athletes earn academic all-Canadian Status (maintaining an average 0f 80% while also competing full-time in varsity sports). Interview one of these athletes to figure out how they balance it all!
On a similar note, Pandas Curling champion and Nursing graduate Selena Sturmay has been awarded the 2019/20 Kathlete Yetman Trophy as the top female Academic All-Canadian! It's the international year of the nurse and midwife, so this is a great story to profile!
U of A heart transplant expert Lori West is exploring why people with different blood types react differently to COVID-19! She just got a Federal grant that will assist her research! Always interesting to see all the COVID-19 research coming out of the uni!
A U of A nursing professor has is leading a research team that is currently compiling a list of prioritized individuals for a COVID-19 vaccine. This list will then advise the Federal Government! Talk to her about her research so far (I'm not sure if she'll disclose the list, but still an interesting story regardless).
Three U of A profs (all women!) have been named one of Edmonton's Top 40 under 40 by Edify magazine! Interview them for an article!
On a similar note, four School of Business alumni have also been named one of Edmonton's top 40 under 40! This includes the co-owner of Love Pizza!
Instructors develop an interactive tool for studying microscopy online: professors in the department of earth and atmospheric sciences have included photos of rock samples to teach students microscopy!
U of A researchers helped bring hidden stories to light for a new documentary chronicling Ukrainian Canadians’ contributions in the Second World War!
Preview a free online lecture on Teaching ethically Queer, Trans, and 2 Spirit topics! The talk takes place on November 16 and is hosted by the university's signature area of research Intersections of Gender! This will need to be posted at least a day or two before the event so the turnover will be a little quicker!
Stigma makes pandemics worse for marginalized groups, according to a U of A paediatrics professor who has recommended ways to help overcome harmful biases. Talk to her to learn more about these recommendations and who's at risk of stigma!
A new U of A study has found that birds use diet and exercise to manage their weight. I guess they're just like us!
As usual, these will be due next Friday around 6 p.m. If you want to take a story but need more time, let me know and we can work out a different deadline!
As always, you are welcome to pitch a story to me!
Have a good Reading Week everyone <3Stay Safe!
