News Pitches!

Hi Friends!

Happy spooky/midterm season!

I hope everyone is having a great long weekend! Though there's no news meeting today, we will be doing a combined editorial meeting tomorrow with Opinion and Arts and culture! From 3:30 p.m. to 5 we're just going to play Among Us and go through some pitches!

However, I wanted to send out pitches early because it's super important to send out interview requests as soon as possible!

Some of these are from last week, but there are a few new pitches!

  • The Campus Food Bank is getting ready for its annual food drive Trick-or-TrEAT. This is a really important initiative this year especially because of the pandemic!

  • There's a Ualberta twitter account that tweets out fun facts every day for some reason?! We can try to get an interview with this account and figure out why!

  • Profile Future Creators, a student group that provides engineering workshops and mentorship for students in grade 7-12

  • The AI4Society Signature Area just launched last week! Write an article about it and how students can get involved!

  • Wellness 101, a free course for U of A students, launched recently. It covers healthy living as students. Talk to the creators to get a preview of the course!

  • U of A Cell Bio professor is developing a new promising cancer drug!

  • The university is using Duolingo to test international students' English levels. They say this approach is more accessible to students, especially because of the pandemic. This would be a really interesting institutional story to write!

  • Do a virtual Streeters asking students how they are finding remote learning so far!

  • Now that the government is allowing international students to come to Canadian post-secondary institutions, do a virtual Streeters with international students around the world and get their reactions!

  • A U of A prof was recently on TV for her research on how individuals with learning disabilities need social connections. It's also learning disability month, so an interview with her on this topic and this awareness month would be great!

  • A new mentorship was created by Black professors to help Black high school students get to university!

  • A new professor at the U of A is studying the evolution of honey bees which is cool because Alberta is home to 40% of Canada's honey bee colonies! Talk about their research!

As always, you are welcome to pitch a story to me! Join us tomorrow for Among Us!!!
