News Pitches - March 20

March 20 news pitches!

Hello everyone! Here is the list of pitches I went through this week! If you're interested in any of these, just shoot me a message!

1. Council elections. Thankfully this isn’t as crazy as executive elections. But for this, someone can go to the results announcement (tentatively on March 21) and just catch the names of the winners and list them in an article.

2. School of Public Health researchers has launched a series of videos to challenge the stigma of substance use in by provoking us to see beyond the stereotypes about people who use drugs. Here’s the website: https://www.see-beyond.ca/

Heather Morris, a PhD student in the School of Public Health and knowledge translation coordinator on the video project and Petra Shulz, co-founder of Moms Stop the Harm and a featured parent, are available for interview to discuss the project.

3. A group of U of A researchers from EAS are hoping to hear from people who witnessed the Mount St. Helens eruption in 1980??? I have no idea why they’re doing this or how they’re hoping to hear from people who witnessed something nearly 40 years ago. Interview the researchers about this pretty weird project.

4. A gift of $310,000 from the estate of Marie Wiedrick, wife of Laurence “Laurie” Wiedrick (1925-1982), a professor of elementary education who helped found the UAlberta School of Library Science, is being used to digitize the Coutts historical collection of more than 6,000 textbooks reaching back to the 1880s that were used in Alberta schools. Contact the library for an interview. More info here: https://illuminate.ualberta.ca/…/wiedrick-collection-gets-o…

5. Prof Q&As. I have a few ideas for this. Someone can do one about the election, or about some of the recent scandals surrounding the UCP. Lemme know if you're interested and I can try to find a prof you can interview.

6. Even more money for automated vehicle research. The University of Alberta Faculty of Engineering has been put in the driver’s seat of a $14.9-million Centre for Autonomous Systems in Strengthening Future Communities, thanks to funding from the provincial government and industry.More info here: https://www.ualberta.ca/…/u-of-a-autonomous-vehicle-researc…

7. Campus club profiles... dang I haven't pitched these in a while, but here are a few clubs that are potentially interesting that someone can write about:A. Friends across campus https://alberta.campuslabs.ca/…/organiz…/friendsacrosscampusB. Latin American Students' Association https://alberta.campuslabs.ca/engage/organization/lasa C. Special Olympics student group https://alberta.campuslabs.ca/engage/organization/souab D. The Shack https://alberta.campuslabs.ca/engage/organization/shack
