News Pitches - March 12

March 12 news pitches!

Hello everyone! Here is the list of pitches I went through yesterday! If you're interested in any of these, just shoot me a message!Oh, and here's a cute dog!

1. Pride parade on March 13. The pride parade is happening again! This time it’s happening on March 14 from noon to one. If you know how to take photos, you can take pics yourself! If not we can try to find a photographer to join you. But for this one, just follow the parade, interview some of the participants, and some of the organizers. The parade will start outside CCIS.

2. International students tuition and residence rates to rise at Board of Governors meeting. It will be happening on the 15th at 8 a.m. If you’re interested in doing more institutional reporting, volunteers are welcome to join us for this!

3. Mental health rally on March 13. A bunch of students are rallying in order to demonstrate the need for more mental health resources on campus (this is kind of in response to the story about the student who was sent an eviction letter after a second attempt at self-harm.) It will be going on from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. More details here: https://www.facebook.com/events/293740131297184/

4. Profile this year’s last lecturer. The last lecture is an event that happens every year where students nominate their favourite prof to talk about something interesting. This year, the nominee is Adam Pinkoski, a kinesiology instructor who ALSO volunteered for The Gateway not that long ago! You can ask him about how he went from Gateway volunteer to kinesiology instructor, and interview one of his students too!

5. 5 days for the homeless. An annual event since 2005, people who participate in this go homeless for 5 days while raising money, and attention, on homelessness. If anyone’s interested, they can interview the organizers and ask them how much they raised this year, why they do it, etc

6. Council elections. Thankfully this isn’t as crazy as executive elections. But for this, someone can go to the results announcement (tentatively on March 21) and just catch the names of the winners and list them in an article.

7. A team of anthropologists, including a U of A grad student, locate unmarked graves of residential schoolchildren in east-central Saskatchewan. Interview the student, Liam Wadsworth, about their work, and how it felt. This has already been covered by other outlets but it would be cool to get more of a student perspective. More info here: https://www.cbc.ca/…/unmarked-graves-residential-school-alb…

8. NEW restaurant in HUB Mall. Construction on Sushi Shop looks as if it’s almost done, so it would be super cool if someone could interview the manager about why they’re expanding here.- Nathan
