this is going to be a fun news week

Hi news friends

I hope you're all having a great reading week so far. I'm away in Vancouver but still actively Gatewaying so I really hope you'll pick up a story! Send me an email or message me if any of the stories below interest you and we'll figure out a deadline that works for both of us :)Sofia

U of A professor wins Governor General's History Award for Scholarly Research

Sarah Carter is a history and native studies professor who will be presented with the award by the new Governor General Julie Payette (the amazing badass astronaut) in Ottawa on November 22 for her book about how women were the victims of land dispossession during the development of the Canadian West. You would talk to her about the book, how it feels to win the prize, and about how she got here.

The future of Catholic school boards

There is a forum on the future of Catholic school boards happening on campus on November 27 at 7 pm. The forum will feature the former education minister David King. You can interview King ahead of the event and preview it, it should be an interesting story since there's been a lot of news around Catholic schools lately. Here's the link to the event on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/1149754461832282/

Afternoon tea at Rutherford House

Apparently there used to be high tea at Rutherford House and people loved it, but then they stopped doing it. Now they'll be doing afternoon tea there because of popular demand. Talk to the Rutherford House people about what the tea will be like and why students should go try it.

Fake student advertising on Overheard at U of A?

This is kind of a weird story, a "student" posted a picture of a sticker on the Overheard Facebook group and then posted the link to where to buy the sticker and then a bunch of people commented saying it was obviously a fake account just for advertising. I think it's just kind of a funny story and you could interview the people who run Overheard about it.

Humongous Juicy Couture ad in SUB

There's a HUMONGOUS ad for Juicy Couture perfume in SUB by the elevators. I asked Robyn Paches (SU VP operations and finance) about it and he said he doesn't have control over which ads are placed there because they've contracted that space out to a media company. Anyway, I think it's really weird (the ad definitely objectifies women and it's GINORMOUS), so you could talk to Robyn more about it (he said he'd be able to find out more).
