NEWS: mid-June update

NEWS: mid-June update! (And some pitches.)

Hey everyone, Nathan here. I just wanted to give an update on a few things that are going on

The biggest thing is to encourage you all to apply for the Gateway's SU award. The SU gives out involvement awards each year, and one of them is in The Gateway's name. It's two $750 awards for contributions to student media, and applicants can't be paid members of any media organization. so it's targeted to volunteers. I won the award myself a few years ago before I became Staff Reporter, and the award used to be $250, so the fact that it's $500 more than it used to means you all should definitely think of applying! More info here.

Also, hit me up if you want to talk about news stuff!

I wanted to use the time before Fall term starts to know how the news section could best benefit volunteers. If you have any ideas on what you'd like to see in terms of workshops or training, let me know and we can set up a time to talk about it over coffee!

Similarly, if there are any stories that appeal to your interest. like specific research stories, and you want me to let you know about them, let me know and I can better tailor my pitches in future meetings. Or I can let you know whenever I see something you'd be interested in.

A few news pitches! =]

If any of these stories interest you, shoot me an email or a message on Facebook and I'll hook you up with the people you'll need to interview.

Profile a recent member of the U of A board of governors

Claudette Tardiff is one of the newer members of the Board of Governors. Tardiff has a really interesting career, she was the dean of Campus Saint-Jean at one point, and then she was a Liberal senator for many years. She retired early from politics and since then she's been back at the U of A. I've also heard she's really active in the Franco-Albertan community.

New additions to the Bruce Peel collection

I recently learned that for every honorary degree recipient, the U of A Senate donates a rare book to the Bruce Peel special collections. Some of these books include a first edition copy of George Orwell's first book Burmese Days and a law dictionary from 1792. Someone could profile each book or do an overview of all the books donated to the collection.

POOP

There's a lot of stories about poop research at the U of A nowadays. A few researchers recently put out a call for stool donors and fecal donations, but a few weeks earlier the same team presented their research on fecal donations in Washington, D.C., which was covered by the New York Times. Someone can do a story incorporating both angles: the call for donations and the presentation in D.C.
