Magazine Writing Submissions Call

Hello there!

The Gateway is excited to announce that we are making our first call for submissions to our monthly print magazine for the year. If you've ever wanted to be in the magazine, now is a great opportunity to do so!

If you want to write an article for the magazine, you must be a member of the Gateway Student Journalism Society, meaning that you must already have five published pieces with The Gateway. They can be under any section or combination of sections, but there must be five.

There is a form attached to this email that all possible contributors must fill out, including a section in which you submit your article idea. Keep in mind that there should be a meaningful narrative to any article, and there must be some reason why the article is relevant to U of A students. The connection can be pretty loose (e.g. the article is about a project happening in Edmonton, and the U of A is in Edmonton) but it needs to be there. 

Beyond that, an article can be about anything at all. Do you know somebody who’s in a local rock band? You could profile them. Have you always wondered how cities are designed and planned? You could write a feature on it. Do you have a cool story or personal experience you’ve always wanted to share? Now you have a platform! Don’t be afraid to be spicy, weird, or too out there. That’s what the magazine is for.For those of you who need a bit more inspiration, we have also included a list of possible article ideas. If any of them interest you, be sure to note that you want to take that particular pitch when you fill out the form. A good thing to keep in mind is our list of themes for the year. Themes (feel free to use these for inspiration, but do not feel obligated to):- Fear- Mental Health- Personality and IdentityThe list also includes types of articles that usually work well for the magazine, so you can decide which type of article best suits your idea. You are welcome to submit more than one article idea if you wish, just make a note of it in your submission.

The deadline to fill out the form and submit your ideas is June 3rd, 2019. The text deadline will be June 24th, 2019 (unless you are writing a feature, in which case you will have an extended deadline). If you’re busy and can’t make this deadline, there will be other opportunities to write over the course of the year. All selections will be reviewed and evaluated by the Art Director, Editor in Chief, and Managing Editor. If your idea is selected for a possible article, you will be contacted by email.
