Magazine pitches time!
Hi everyone,I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving long weekend. I have a couple announcements: first, our Halloween party will be on October 30th, at Dewey's, at 6 PM. This party is a chance to get to know your fellow volunteers, and chat with staff members you may not normally see. Make sure to come in costume!Second, we will be screening Midsommar (director's cut) on October 29th at Metro Cinema at 9:30 PM. Admission is free with a student ID, so come out and watch a great horror film on us. Hope to see you all there! Finally, here is a list of pitches for our upcoming January and February magazine issues. If you're interested in picking any of these up, let me know. Best,ChristinePitch list:
Diversions:
January horoscopes and crossword (unthemed)
Notes/RR:
Q&A:
What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you in the classroom?
Profile:
The U of A’s librarians. They do tons of work for the student body, keeping the libraries maintained and conducting information finding workshops for classes. It would be cool to shed light on their work!
The Chimo Animal Assisted Wellness and Learning Society brings dogs on campus every fall/winter term around finals season. Why did they start doing that in the first place? How have students reacted?
Human interest
Long-distance romance: have you ever been in a LDR? What is/was it like? Would you recommend it to others?
Failing a class: every student’s worst nightmare. Has this ever happened to you? How much does it matter now, and what did you learn from it?
Commentary
What’s the deal with Valentine’s Day? How did it start? What does the fact that we have an entire day dedicated to romantic love say about us?
Features (February):
Newcomers: more and more people are immigrating to Canada all the time. What is it like to move here? What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of moving to Canada? How do Canadians treat newcomers? Interviewees could be: international students, a professor who studies issues relating to immigration.
Bullying: not just for kids anymore. It appears that relational aggression doesn’t go away once people become adults. One in two Canadian adults say they’ve been bullied at work, and tons of university students have been picked on by peers as well. How is bullying handled in the adult world? What kind of impact does it leave on victims? How can this issue be resolved?
The nature of work: more and more, young adults are working in jobs that don’t offer full-time hours, have fewer and fewer benefits, and have little security or permanence. Finding full-time, stable employment is becoming more unlikely, even for those with university degrees. What are the driving forces behind this trend? How does the student lifestyle affect what young adults value in a job? Interviewees could be: a sociology professor who studies work (I actually have a prof in mind), students who work in these sorts of jobs, etc.
