Hello peeps!
Hope y'all had a healthy and relaxing winter break after all of your final exams! With new beginnings comes new inspirations for art so let me know if any of these pitches are your fancy. I'm hoping this newsletter can go at least bimonthly, depending on the amount of articles that need illustrations and the timing of when the details for the movie poster is given to me. If not, you'll be notified at least monthly.
Because of timing during the winter break, I've taken up this month's movie poster pitch. Since the movie is next Wed (y'all are welcome to join us BTW:
Jan 18, Don't Worry Darling, Metro Cinema
) and we usually have the poster finished a week before, I didn't want to give a rushed timeline. You'll be seeing the poster on our newsstands (along with our winter semester newspaper, highlighting
two The Gateway volunteers' artworks in the Diversions section
), starting tomorrow/Thu (depending on printing availability) until the movie screening next Wed.
We do have an
open house tomorrow 4pm @ the office (SUB 3-04)
and we'll also be going to Dewey's after, so y'all are welcome to learn more about
The Gateway
, in case y'all are interested in writing for us, and hang out with other volunteers.
As always, feel free to share with your illustrator friends and/or refer them to me so I can put them in the newsletter. If you have any ideas on what else to contribute to the section, besides the occasional article illustrations and movie poster pitches from me, let me know via email.
- Arthur :)

Article illustration/s: Al Jazeera and family of Shireen Abu Akleh file request to investigate her death at the ICC
Where:
published on our website
When: ASAP
This opinion piece is a deep dive about Israel's hostility to Palestinian journalists and the shifting narrative in their attempts to avoid blame and accountability.
Since this article uses Abu Akleh's death as an example of the consequences of the Israel-Palestine conflict, you can draw a portrait of Shireen in a helmet and a blue flak jacket with "PRESS" printed in large letters.
A minimum of 1 illustration is required for the article header but if you would like to have more than one, there's currently 4 subheaders in the article so an overall maximum of 5 illustrations (including the article header) are allowed.
Feature illustration/s: First Peoples’ House student meals
Where:
published on our website
When: ASAP
The feature talks about how the free monthly student meals at the First Nations' House brings the First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) student community on campus together. It also talks about how food plays a significant role in many cultures and the importance of having a space specific for FNMI students from a first-person perspective.
The food mentioned in the feature are stew and bannock, KFC, bannock tacos, fresh fruit, and sandwiches.
A minimum of 1 illustration is required for the article header but preferably would like to have 2-3 illustrations embedded in the article along with the article header illustration (so total of 3-4 illustrations).
State of the Art: Call for general illustration submissions!
Where:
published online
When:
no particular due date, open year-round
Although our magazine run is cut short, we're currently building up a space on the site to house all your cool artworks. Submissions may include, but are not limited to, illustrations (traditional or digital) and comics. Here's an
from one of our volunteers from last month!
