Thursday at 2:00 p.m. we have a workshop with Rachel Narvey, who used to be a reporter at the Saint Albert Gazette, covering municipal politics. This workshop is in person.

A University of Alberta team has developed a new step to improve the process for creating insulin-producing pancreatic cells from a patient’s own stem cells, bringing the prospect of injection-free treatment closer for people with diabetes.
The researchers take stem cells from a single patient’s blood and chemically wind them back in time, then forward again in a process called “directed differentiation,” to eventually become insulin-producing cells.
An Edmonton transplantation physician and U of A professor of surgery and oncology has won The Canadian Society of Transplantation Lifetime Achievement Award. Write a profile focusing on the career of Dr. Ronald B. Moore.

Are Arc Cards an Effective Way to Use Transit? Recently Edmonton got rid of its old ticket machines and replaced them with new Arc card ones. These new machines allow you to purchase and load an Arc card for use on ETS services and its purpose is meant to allow people to use payment methods other than cash, such as debit and credit cards. It is also meant to give people more options beyond paper tickets. Is the Arc card an affordable and accessible way to use transit in the city? Should we move towards more accessible options, such as paying with a debit or credit card directly? How can ETS provide more accessible and affordable options in regards to using transit?
Potential Strike of City Library Workers and Administrative Staff: Edmonton Public Library staff and other administrative workers are anticipating a strike — with part of the reason being they have not had contracts since 2020 and have been without raises since 2018. What does this mean for EPL and other administrative staff affected by this? Should they go on strike? What does this anticipated strike say about how EPL staff are treated and prioritized in Edmonton?
Carbon Tax in Atlantic Canada: Trudeau announced that Canadians using home heating oil to heat their homes in Atlantic Canada are exempt from the carbon tax for the next 3 years. The idea is that the government needs to be supporting Canadians throughout the battle against climate change. However, Canadians who use other forms of energy to heat their homes such as natural gas, as most of us in Alberta do, or propane, feel that this is unfair. Write an article on the political debate regarding this issue, and whether or not this exemption is fair to Canadians.
Marble Pedestal/Burlap Sack - Daylight Savings Time: This weekend, we turned the clocks back an hour as daylight savings came to an end for this year. Daylight savings time has been debated for years, with Alberta even having a referendum about it last election. Is daylight saving time worth keeping around, or should the province scrap the idea? What kinds of impacts does this change have on people? Share your thoughts about changing the clocks!
