Lasting relationships are made, not found, research shows.
To find a meaningful, lasting relationship, people should stop looking for a soulmate, says a U of A researcher. A recent paper from Adam Galovan, a family scientist in the Faculty of Agricultural, Life, and Environmental Sciences challenges the myth of having a one and only love.
The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is celebrating the conservation of 65 hectares of private land in the Beaver Hills Biosphere. The land is located on the east side of Elk Island National Park and is owned by University of Alberta biology professor Heather Proctor.
The U of A team found statistical associations between income inequality and higher risk of “hospitalizations of despair” and all-cause hospitalizations. Hospitalizations and deaths of despair are defined as being due to drug overdose, suicide attempt, or alcohol-related liver disease.
A U of A researcher has unearthed two species of weevils — one new and one thought to have been extinct — that have managed to survive clearcutting of the Philippines rainforest.
Alberta vaccine experts are warning it’s just a matter of time before measles cases show up in the province, as a surge in cases continues in Europe.

$10/day daycare: In April 2023, Danielle Smith announced that by 2026 Albertans will have access to $10/day daycare. However, there have been some concerns about how beneficial this program will actually be. Daycare operators are concerned that this new program will not be able to provide a well-rounded daycare experience — things like sufficient staffing, meal services, and additional programs. Is $10/day daycare more of a hassle in the longterm? How can the province better support childcare centres, especially in regards to Albertan families?
Edmonton Construction Season: Despite a mild winter, most construction projects have been on pause for the season. While this provides some relief for a quieter season, one without construction, some business owners are grieving about the impact certain construction projects have had on their business. How can the city improve construction in the city? Should businesses and residents simply have to put up with the effects of construction? Write about how this can be improved.
New Metro Line Stations: The city opened the new NAIT/Blatchford Market station and closed the existing temporary NAIT station on January 20. This will allow the metro line to use the standard 4 car train on the metro line instead of 3 car trains in use due to the shorter length of the temporary NAIT station. However, two additional stations were built on the metro line, not just one. The city voted to keep the second station further into Blatchford closed as they allege that the development there is not yet at the level to accommodate a station. Is this the right move, or tax dollars irresponsibly spent on a station?
Top 5: Parking areas on campus: Do you have a favourite spot to park on campus? Is the Education parking lot your go-to? What about Windsor? Tell us your top 5 places to park on campus and why!
