  1. Researchers improve mining yields while capturing CO2: A University of Alberta researcher has found a way to remove CO2 from the atmosphere while mining critical metals needed for renewable energy infrastructure.

  2. Machine learning programs predict risk of death based on results from routine hospital tests: The study is a proof-of-concept for using routinely collected data to improve individual care and allow the health-care system to “learn” as it goes, according to principal investigator Padma Kaul, professor of medicine and co-director of the Canadian VIGOUR centre

  3. Mild fever helps clear infections faster, new study suggests: Research on fish conducted by U of A shows that waiting before reaching for medications may be beneficial for humans.

  4. Asthma rates rise in Alberta, but medication use flatlines: U of A researchers have uncovered a trend in the dispensation of asthma medications, that if addressed could improve patient outcomes and reduce hospital visits.

  5. Machine learning predicts risk of opioid use disorder for individual patients: Clinicians and policy makers might get assistance from artificial intelligence in predicting opioid use disorder, thanks to a team of Alberta researchers.

Opinion Pitches

  1. Plans to extend the Capital Line LRT to Ellerslie, construction to begin spring 2024: The City of Edmonton has recently announced that there are plans to expand the Capital Line LRT from Century Park to Ellerslie, with construction set to begin next Spring. However, many Edmontonians are concerned that this project will either be delayed, or be prioritized over the Valley Line LRT, which is still incomplete.

  2. City of Edmonton approves a series of recommendations that will improve the transparency and accountability of the Edmonton Police: One such recommendation is that city administration prepare bylaw changes that would establish a third-party, independent of EPS, that would oversee any allegations that breach the Oath of Office, Code of Conduct, or Conflict of Interest.

  3. Edmonton’s “One Strong Voice” Campaign to to reduce gender-based violence on transit: The city recently launched a new bystander awareness campaign in order to equip transit users on how to approach situations involving gender-based violence. But, some are concerned that this places the responsibility on transit users, as opposed to peace or police officers. However, others think this encourages community responsibility, and allows those in the community to step in, if comfortable, before the police.

  4. Danielle Smith only allows reporters to ask one question during news conferences: Smith has made waves over the last week after she limited the amount of questions reporters can ask — only one, with no follow-up questions. Many have called out this practice, including NDP leader Rachel Notley. Could this impact Smith and the UCP's standing in the provincial election?

  5. Marble Pedestal: Amarjeet Sohi challenging other mayors during NHL games: Yesterday, ahead of the Oilers versus L.A. Kings game, Amarjeet Sohi challenged the mayor of L.A. to a similar bet he made against Calgary mayor Jyoti Gondek — the mayor of the losing city has to wear the winning team's jersey at their city council. Talk about how this practice boosts friendly competition between teams, and boosts engagement from Edmontonians!
