Schwing: Arts & Culture Pitches

What time is it? IT'S ARTS 'N CULTURE PITCHES TIME!

is it winter already

BOI. It became December weather-wise right after Halloween which is SERENDIPITOUS as HELL. Call me nuts, but I kinda like the cold weather. If it gets colder still, it makes the warmth of the indoors that much more welcoming. ANYWAY: Have some pitches via your weekly post-meeting arts and culture email. (ICYMI: Arts & Culture meetings are Tuesdays in SUB 3-04 at 3:00 PM.)Also, here's your weekly reminder to pitch me any ideas you have! I'd love to hear them. Especially for the following columns:

  • Diss Track: Are there 3-4 songs that grind your gears in the worst way possible? Diss the crap out of them in this column.

  • Brew Crew/Vino Bitches: A fun, 150- to 350-word review of your favourite (or not-so-favourite) beer, wine, or other alcoholic beverage of choice.

  • Noodle Nation: Who loves noodles? You (might) love noodles. Write 450 to 500 words on your favourite noodle (ramen, pho, other long stringy flour-y food) haunts for this column.

  • DatApp: Have an app that’s been a game- or life-changer? Wax eloquently about it (or a few of your favourites) in a short 150- to 350-word installment for this column.

  • Top 5: Top 5 study spots, places to cry in public, late-night post-exam diners...you name it, you can write a Top 5 on it! 50-200 words per Thing In The Top 5.

  • Emoji of the Week: This one’s self-explanatory. Trawl your recently used emojis and sing praise about it and why other people should worship it as The Best Emoji too.

  • Fashion Streeters: If you love walking up to people and asking them about their cool outfits, this one’s for you. Q & A format. Consider pairing up with a photo volunteer or taking your own pics!

  • Doin’ You: Everyone has something they do exceptionally well. Wanna teach others your wizardry? Walk us step-by-step through the process of a master for this column.

  • Playlists: Have killer musical taste? Share it on The Gateway with a curated playlist.

  • ...AND MORE! You can also pitch me your own column ideas if you want to write your own or if you've seen any awesome movies/heard any music/read any books/played any games/eaten any food etc., let me know.

Lemme know at [email protected] if these pique your interest.

And read on for this week's 很好 pitches.

Review: DJ Brace album and/or November 16 concert

Calling all ya EDM/electronic music fans. Canada’s DJ Brace (whose name alone is pretty sweet) latest record Apatheia came out last week. This is DJ Brace’s third full length (the last of a trilogy), the first which won a Juno Award in 2009; the second was awarded a QC Felix nomination. We have a complimentary copy of the album in advance of its official release, and if you're looking to slurp up some tunes to review, hit me up and I'll send it to you! DJ Brace is also playing in Edmonton on November 16 at 99Ten, and you can review the show!

Interview/review: The Funk Hunters' December 16 concert

THE FUNK, THE WHOLE FUNK, AND NOTHING BUT THE FUNK (I like How I Met Your Mother, okay?). These Vancouver-based dudes, whose real band name is The Funk Hunters, are playing Union Hall on December 16, and you can either review the show or interview the band ahead of their set! They've done over 600 performances in 16 countries + performed at major festivals such as Coachella, Burning Man, Osheaga, Shambhala and Electric Forest. The pair have also amassed over 10 million track streams across their catalogue of remixes and collaborations, including official remixes for Imagine Dragons, Selena Gomez. Review the show or chat 'em up!

Album review: Kelly Clarkson's Meaning Of Life

“MEANING OF LIFE” is the album Kelly Clarkson was destined to make with Atlantic Records, a collection of smart and sensual soul-inspired pop that immediately belongs among the legendary label’s classic canon. For her eighth studio album – and follow-up to 2015’s chart-topping “PIECE BY PIECE” – Clarkson united a stellar team of top songwriters and producers to collaborate on her Atlantic debut. Wanna review this or just want to see where this former American Idol is at?

Review this album.

Album review: Blake Shelton's Texoma Shore

If the fact that Blake Shelton just released the deluxe version of his Christmas album, like, two weeks ago weren't enough, this man just blessed us with this record. Get your Southern on and wax poetically about how the banjos touched your soul or hit us with a measured, intensely insightful review. Either or. After reading our awe-inspiring Christmas album review, though, I don't know how you could not want to review this. Up to the challenge? Email me to get your free copy and be serenaded by the Shelton.

Album review: Weezer's Pacfic Daydream

It navigates the uncertainty between reality and dreams, blurring the line between the listener knowing if they are daydreaming the world of the album, or if the world of the album is daydreaming them. It’s a record about finding the gray area between the black and the white, about escaping the everyday into the fantasy of what may be just down the line, but also maybe isn’t. It’s an album that sounds like the Beach Boys and The Clash fell in love by the ocean and had one hell of an amazing baby. Review it (and get it free)!
