Pipe Down: Arts & Culture Pitches

What time is it? IT'S ARTS 'N CULTURE PITCHES TIME!

I don't need a microwave...because I'm already heated

...from the sun, which is blessing us with its presence once again. I think the ideal temperature is around 15-17 degrees, no wind, with sun, but feel free to disagree. Also, what are people's opinions on brunch? I ask because personally, I don't think I've had a really great brunch yet, something that I hadn't really realized until recently. Do I feel a brunch bracket coming on? Let me know your thoughts and maybe we can turn this inkling of an idea into a full-fledged beast. Have some pitches via your weekly post-meeting arts and culture email. ICYMI: Arts & Culture meetings are Tuesdays in SUB 3-04 at 4:00-5:00 PM!Also, here's your weekly reminder to pitch me any ideas you have! I'd love to hear them. Especially for the following columns:

  • Diss Track: Are there 3-4 songs that grind your gears in the worst way possible? Diss the crap out of them in this column.

  • Brew Crew/Vino Bitches: A fun, 150- to 350-word review of your favourite (or not-so-favourite) beer, wine, or other alcoholic beverage of choice.

  • Noodle Nation: Who loves noodles? You (might) love noodles. Write 450 to 500 words on your favourite noodle (ramen, pho, other long stringy flour-y food) haunts for this column.

  • DatApp: Have an app that’s been a game- or life-changer? Wax eloquently about it (or a few of your favourites) in a short 150- to 350-word installment for this column.

  • Top 5: Top 5 study spots, places to cry in public, late-night post-exam diners...you name it, you can write a Top 5 on it! 50-200 words per Thing In The Top 5.

  • Emoji of the Week: This one’s self-explanatory. Trawl your recently used emojis and sing praise about it and why other people should worship it as The Best Emoji too.

  • Fashion Streeters: If you love walking up to people and asking them about their cool outfits, this one’s for you. Q & A format. Consider pairing up with a photo volunteer or taking your own pics!

  • Doin’ You: Everyone has something they do exceptionally well. Wanna teach others your wizardry? Walk us step-by-step through the process of a master for this column.

  • Playlists: Have killer musical taste? Share it on The Gateway with a curated playlist.

  • ...AND MORE! You can also pitch me your own column ideas if you want to write your own or if you've seen any awesome movies/heard any music/read any books/played any games/eaten any food etc., let me know.

Lemme know at [email protected] if these pique your interest.

And read on for this week's 很好 pitches.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Gateway hiring is coming up.

If you'd like to be next year's Arts & Culture Editor (it's fun and I'd really recommend it), I highly encourage you to diversify your writing by taking different types of stories, writing for different sections, and anything else that's tickling your brain cells. If you have any questions at all about the job or just want to listen to A Tribe Called Quest's "Can I Kick It?" ten times on repeat, feel free to hit me up!

Show review: BVILER RVVM SITUATIVN @ The Bower

We've received word about a music show run in part by UAlberta students called "BVILER RVVM SITUATIVN" that focuses on local artists creating and performing in an event-based setting. They're having their fourth installation at The Bower on March 30, and it could be really cool to check out a local event that's very much homegrown in the YEG and UAlberta sense. Wanna check it out? Let me know! :)

Interview: Becky Thera on her art exhibit and #MeToo

Becky Thera's final fine arts masters program, Lacuna, is in FAB now. Joining a rising chorus of voices, Lacuna explores the difficult and painful journey from sexual violence to recovery. While thoroughly researched, the latest exhibit in the U of A’s Fine Arts Building Gallery also reveals Thera’s personal struggle to come to grips with the sexual assault she endured shortly before arriving on campus three years ago. Talk to her!

Concert review: Symphonic Dances @ Winspear on March 25

A crowning achievement by Russian composer Rachmaninoff, Symphonic Dances is exciting, colourful and macabre. An orchestral suite in three movements, the University Symphony Orchestra will perform Rachmaninov’s final composition evoking his shifting harmonies and rhythmic vitality. Conductor: Petar Dundjerski. Review the show and revel in this awesome music!

Interview/show review: DCF @ Winspear on March 29

Pop artist DCF is going to be hitting the road with Lights, supporting her 46-date North American Tour. He’s going to be playing at the Winspear Centre on March 29. Now he’s gearing up to release his own debut LP, which will be coming out later this year. Interview him and/or review the show!

Interview: Canadian conductor + UAlberta alum Adam Johnson

Canadian conductor and U of A graduate, Adam Johnson, recently guest conducted two Edmonton Symphony Orchestra concerts. chat with him about his career and the experience of working in classical music and whatever else you might want to ask a conductor, because personally, I actually have never spoken to one in real life...! Converse with him.
