Chicken Soup with Rice: Arts & Culture Pitches

What time is it? IT'S ARTS 'N CULTURE PITCHES TIME!

welcome back (almost)

Hope you've all enjoyed Reading Week and living up the last few days of your break time. This email's sorta delayed because it's more like a preview for this coming week, but the pitches coming to you now are a sneak peek at what'll be brought up at the next pitch meeting. So! Have some pitches via your weekly post-meeting arts and culture email. ICYMI: Arts & Culture meetings are Tuesdays in SUB 3-04 at 4:00-5:00 PM!Also, here's your weekly reminder to pitch me any ideas you have! I'd love to hear them. Especially for the following columns:

  • Diss Track: Are there 3-4 songs that grind your gears in the worst way possible? Diss the crap out of them in this column.

  • Brew Crew/Vino Bitches: A fun, 150- to 350-word review of your favourite (or not-so-favourite) beer, wine, or other alcoholic beverage of choice.

  • Noodle Nation: Who loves noodles? You (might) love noodles. Write 450 to 500 words on your favourite noodle (ramen, pho, other long stringy flour-y food) haunts for this column.

  • DatApp: Have an app that’s been a game- or life-changer? Wax eloquently about it (or a few of your favourites) in a short 150- to 350-word installment for this column.

  • Top 5: Top 5 study spots, places to cry in public, late-night post-exam diners...you name it, you can write a Top 5 on it! 50-200 words per Thing In The Top 5.

  • Emoji of the Week: This one’s self-explanatory. Trawl your recently used emojis and sing praise about it and why other people should worship it as The Best Emoji too.

  • Fashion Streeters: If you love walking up to people and asking them about their cool outfits, this one’s for you. Q & A format. Consider pairing up with a photo volunteer or taking your own pics!

  • Doin’ You: Everyone has something they do exceptionally well. Wanna teach others your wizardry? Walk us step-by-step through the process of a master for this column.

  • Playlists: Have killer musical taste? Share it on The Gateway with a curated playlist.

  • ...AND MORE! You can also pitch me your own column ideas if you want to write your own or if you've seen any awesome movies/heard any music/read any books/played any games/eaten any food etc., let me know.

Lemme know at [email protected] if these pique your interest.

And read on for this week's 很好 pitches.

Show review: Faith Healer @ The Rec Room

Edmonton's Faith Healer's Try ;-) is the follow-up to 2015’s Cosmic Troubles and saw singer-guitarist Jalbert joined by drummer/multi-instrumentalist Renny Wilson. They're back on the road this March and April with dates across North America including an appearance at SXSW. They'll be playing at the Rec Room on February 28! Wanna see 'em? Let me know!

Interview: MILCK @ Starlite Room

MILCK is a cathartic Los Angeles singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, poet, social activist, and singer getting attention for her very personal song “Quiet,” which became the unofficial anthem of the woman’s march. She's coming to Edmonton's Starlite Room on March 1, opening for Amy Shark, and is available that day or in advance. Talk to her!

Theatre review/interview: Romeo and Juliet Cineplex release

The theatrical release of Romeo and Juliet for Stratford Festival’s Stage to Screen series. It'll be airing in a Cineplex nearby! Stratford Festival is arguably the most recognized classical theatre company in North America and the series is bringing two of its stellar productions to the big screen at select Cineplex cinemas across Canada. Romeo and Juliet is being released on March 3rd, and select interview opportunities with lead talent are available. It’s a wonderful opportunity to showcase fellow Canadian theatrical talent and share our excitement in welcoming them to the big screen for the first time. Interview the leads!

Theatre review: Rapid Fire Theatre's SPHINXES

Ever heard of the Bechdel test? Or the Sphinx test? Rapid Fire Theatre wants to pass both of these in SPHINXES, their month-long celebration of International Women's Day! Focusing on narratives led by the female, trans, and non-binary cast of RFT, SPHINXES aims to explore the spaces where gender and improv intersect through comedy. “Sphinxes allows the female and trans* folk of RFT to challenge how we portray gender onstage,” Julia Grochowski, SPHINXES co-director says. Devised by performers who identify as women or gender non-conforming, the show hopes to challenge audiences’ assumptions of their stories, and to explore femininity as a concept. Interview the organizers or review the show!

Concert review: Rio by Night at The Sewing Machine Factory

Rio By Night is a queer-femme-fronted art rock/indie pop band from Vancouver, B.C. with upcoming tour dates in BC and Alberta. Frontwoman, Britt MacLeod delivers powerful, disarming vocals, and lyrically explores extraordinary everyday ephemera, dark daydreams, and the issues that make fire catch in her belly. Multi-instrumentalist, Paul Wilson, braids in surges and pulses of synth layers, and melodic basslines; Reggie Harvey (an Irish import) creates impossibly-catchy guitar riffs; and drummer, Mike Lauder, with innately primal but refreshingly textured drum beats, offers a satisfying grounding for the band’s dark and driving pop. They're playing a show in Edmonton at The Sewing Machine Factory March 9 with a few local bands. Review the show!
