Arts & Culture Sept. 19 Pitches

The Gateway Newsletter

What time is it? IT'S ARTS 'N CULTURE PITCHES TIME!

Visual Art, Indigenous Media, and a New Regime

Those are some of the topics we have in store for you this week. But, as always, there's more where they came from! If you want something different, let me know what you're interested in and I'll try to set you up with a story that suits your inclinations. Or, if you have an idea of your own, pitch it to me! I'm always an email away.Poll for Best Meeting TimeBut before we get to pitches, I have a housekeeping item: a poll to determine the best possible meeting time for volunteers. Some of my colleagues have adjusted their meeting times to make sure more folks can attend, and I'd like to follow suit. So, fill out this Doodle poll to let me know when works best for you. I'll announce the results this Sunday morning, and if the meeting time needs to change, the change will be effective next week.Closing Reception for Design Forte and Telling Stories OtherwiseThese two exhibitions in the FAB Gallery are closing TOMORROW, September 20, with the closing reception running 7-10 p.m. Go to the reception and write about the exhibitions -- and see if you can get a flash interview with some of the artists!Media IndigenaThis Indigenous current affairs podcast is having its first ever live taping this Friday, September 21, 7-10 p.m. in FAB 1-29. You could interview the hosts of the podcast, Rick Harp, and the U of A's Kim TallBear (Native Studies) and Ken Williams (Drama), and/or you could go to the taping and write a commentary piece about it.Nuit BlancheThis night of public art installations and performance events is happening throughout Edmonton's downtown core on September 29! You could interview the organizers or some of the artists to see what all the fuss is about, and/or go yourself and write about -- and perhaps photograph -- your experience! In particular, I'd like someone to write about the Gentrification Party, which will be a Chinese Edmontonian art event at the former site of the Harbin Gate.Mountains and Water: Visions of the Land from Canada and ChinaThis exhibition in the Telus Centre showcases Canadian visual art representing the land alongside select items in the MacTaggart Art Collection -- the U of A's hallmark collection of classical Chinese art. The exhibition closes on October 5. I can set you up with the organizers of the exhibition to discuss it, or you can write a commentary piece!Drama has a new Chair...And she's new to the country entirely! Melanie Dreyer-Lude came from a post in the United States to lead the Department of Drama for (at least) the next five years. Interview Dreyer-Lude about her career, research, and ideas for the department moving forward. And that's a wrap on this week's pitches! Please fill out the poll asap, and I'll let y'all know if the meeting time changes accordingly. Shoot me an email at [email protected] if any of these stories interest you, or if you have a pitch of your own to run by me.Cheers!Jonah
