Arts and Culture pitches! (June 7)

Arts and Culture Pitches!

These pitches are amoozingly great!

Hey y'all! It's Jin here!

I know that pun didn't really make any sense but I'm really running out of puns guys. These pitches milk summer for all it's worth, but hopefully one of them is appealing! As always, let me know if you have something you'd like to cover as well — the recurring columns are at the bottom of the newsletter!

My apologies for the outdated link last week for the Discord! If you're still interested in joining, let me know and I'll get you a fresh link! We're still deciding when and what we would like to do with the Discord, so feel free to send me ideas if you've got something you'd be up for :)

And without further ado, the pitches!

Pitches for the Week:

Attend the book launch for Gregory Forth's Between Ape and Human! Forth is a professor emeritus at the U of A, and is releasing Between Ape and Human, an exploration of the missing hominoid between the two species. Based off of stories that Forth heard from local Indonesian cultures, this book is an exploration of history and anthropology.Let me know if you're interested in attending the book launch at Audreys Books on June 11 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.!

Preview the plays being put on this summer by Freewill Shakespeare Festival!Shakespeare in the Park is coming back to Edmonton, and this year they'll be featuring an audience favourite — A Midsummer Night's Dream, and a brand new production, Measure for Measure!Media are invited on June 14 and 15 at 8:00 p.m. in Hawrelak Park to preview A Midsummer Night's Dream and Measure for Measure respectively. If you're interested in this pitch, I would ask that you have a good understanding of Shakespeare and these plays specifically. This pitch also has the potential for two volunteers to cover each media showing, so let me know what works for you!

Interview Jill Thomson! Thomson, who is an artist and U of A master's student, recently painted a mural for the Canterbury Heights seniors’ residence in west Edmonton. This mural explores the intergenerational bonds between communities and people.Let me know if you'd like to chat with Thomson about her art, mural, or anything along those lines!

Check out UP on the Square!UP on the Square is a free and family-friendly event happening at Churchill Square on June 18 to celebrate the start of the summer and the variety of festivals that are coming to Edmonton! There will be live music, live poetry readings by the Poet Laureate, food trucks, and more! This would be a great opportunity to check out the live offerings from the city and to do live interviews, or to preview the event ahead of time! Let me know if you'd be interested in checking it out!

Interview Rebel Priests! Rebel Priests is a rock'n'roll band from Vancouver who will be visiting Edmonton on July 2 at Starlite Temple.Let me know if you'd like to interview them ahead of that date!

This is the newest one put on by Edmonton's Telus World of Science and is their newest feature exhibit.

Media are invited to the opening on June 9 at 10:00 a.m., and have an opportunity to speak to Canadian Space Agency astronaut Joshua Kutryk. Let me know if you'd like to attend!

Check out the new SNAP Gallery exhibits!W Y S I W Y G by Alex Linfield and Nonsuch by Morgan Melenka are on exhibit at the SNAP Gallery from June 18 to July 23. W Y S I W Y G explores how social media and technology affects the way we curate our public image, and Nonsuch explores Edmonton's built environment, in both real and imagined histories.Let me know if you're planning to check out either of these exhibits and/or if you'd like to speak to one of the artists about their exhibit!
