Arts and Culture pitches! (June 28)

Arts and Culture Pitches!

It's a real toss-up which of these pitches is best!

Hey y'all! It's Jin here!

Sorry about all the puns; I am fully aware they're corny on the cobb.

This week is pretty slow when it comes to pitches, so make sure to scroll down to the bottom of the newsletter and check out the recurring columns if you're interested in pitching your own idea to me!

And without further ado, the pitches!

Pitches for the Week:

Interview someone involved with Peonies in Bloom! The newest exhibit from the Mactaggart Art Collection is Peonies in Bloom, highlighting the peony — currently in bloom on the Y of A campus — and why it remains an auspicious symbol in Chinese culture. This is a free online exhibit that you can check out and write up on, but I can also reach out to the curator for an interview if that's more up your alley.

Interview Lewis Lavoie!Lavoie is a local artist and illustrator who is currently painting a new wall in Old Strathcona on the shared Maki Maki parking lot. This large painting will be perfect for photos, so let me know if you'd like to make a visit to see it and talk to Lavole about the piece and his process!

Check out the new Yorath House talk!On July 7 from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., Adriana Davies (writer, historian, and curator) and Marlena Wyman (visual artist and past Historian Laureate) are giving a virtual talk reflecting on their joint residency.Let me know if you'd like to attend and/or do an interview with the artists involved with the talk!

Interview King of Foxes! King of Foxes is the musical project of Edmonton's Olivia Street. She released the music video for "Only Here On Loan" on June 8, which features 15 costume changes, 12 different make-up looks and seven wigs. If you're a fan of indie-alternative music that's local to the city, let me know if you'd like to talk to King of Foxes and I'll set up an interview!

Interview someone involved with Clue!Running from July 16 to August 7, Clue is the newest production from Citadel Theatre. Inspired by the 1980s movie, this comedy production keeps you guessing whodunnit throughout the play until the final twist!Let me know if you'd be interested in talking to someone who worked on this production!

Check out The Immaculate Perfection of F**king and Bleeding in the Gender Neutral Bathroom of an Upper-Middle Class High School!Offered by the Fringe Theatre and running from June 29 to July 9, this comedy/drama production revolves around the final year of high school for a group of students who spend their time smoking, crying, and touching each other in the gender neutral bathroom. After a trans senior conceives a baby despite her being a virgin, the adolescents are made to reassess their priorities, friendships, and what safety means to them.Let me know if you want to talk to someone involved with the production or if you're planning to go to one of the showings!
