Hello peeps!

I hope everyone is getting through midterms, reading week is almost upon us!

Here's some announcements for the week:

• Emily, Arthur, Katie from the Opinion section, and Lily from the News section will be flying to Hamilton for a conference from this Thu (16th) to Mon (20th) so they may not be able to email you back immediately during that time.

• Our Gateway to Cinema screening of Top Gun: Maverick is next Fri on Feb 24, 6:45pm. You will get free tickets with a student ID (doesn't have to be UofA), and the Gateway staff will tabling before and after the show (come and say hi!).

• Job postings are scheduled to go up in the coming weeks. Emily, our Editor-in-Chief, gave a presentation 2 weeks ago about the positions we'll be hiring for next year. If you have any questions about any of the positions, let Emily know via email ([email protected]) or come by the office to chat!

Event/Food Review: Sweet Treats & Latte FestivalFeb 4-20Old StrathconaTest out some sweet goodies and coffee at the Sweet Treats & Latte Festival! Bakeries, cages, and bubble tea shops in the business district are participating in the event, including Ampersand 27, DaDeO, and Hexagon Cafe. If you participate you have the chance to win weekly and festival prizes.

Poetry and Music Open Mic: All That You ChangeFeb 16, 6:30-8:30pmArt Gallery of AlbertaIn celebration of Black History Month, the AGA is hosting an Open Mic that will be featuring several showcased performances of poetry and music, followed an open stage for anyone who would like to share their own stories.

Rock out with local Edmonton punk band, Darryl Saves Lives. This group just released their latest single "Forgetting." Bad Communicators, Misfortune Tellers, and Zachary Red will be backing them up for this show.

Event Review: Winefest EdmontonFebruary 24 & 25Edmonton Convention CentreSample a wide range of wine and hors d'ouerves at Edmonton Winefest! You will get the chance to try many pairings of wine with both sweet and savoury bites. The festival gives out door prizes, and has a partnership with the Edmonton Food Bank. Donations of non-perishable items are accepted at the event.

Performance Review: NASA Conference: Saxophone ConcertsFeb 16 & 17 @ 7:30PM, Feb 18 @ 2:00PMConvocation HallThe North American Saxophone Alliance (NASA) is hosting three concerts as part of their regional conference. The first concert is Saxophone Solo and Chamber Works, the second Pillippe Lerous and other French composers, and the final show will be a Saxophone Concerti with the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the UofA Saxophone Ensemble. The concerts will feature players from across Western Canada.

Play Review: Jersey BoysFeb 11 - Mar 12The Citadel TheatreThis show is a story of four men from New Jersey who end up forming one of the most successful bands in music history, The Four Seasons.

Feb 4 - 19The Citadel Theatre

This play is based on the real life story of the first Black heavyweight world champion Jack Johnson. Set in 1905, the main character Jay "The Sport" Jackson faces racism and fights for a place in sport history.

• Eating Edmonton: Write about your favourite (or not-so-favourite) local haunts in this miscellaneous foodie column. A great way to spotlight local restaurants in a time when they really need it!

• Top 5: Top 5 streaming shows, places to cry in public, work-from-home tips...you name it, you can write a Top 5 on it!

• Playlists: Have killer musical taste? Share it on The Gateway with a curated playlist.

Columns from the Culture Part of A&C:

• The First Time: Try something totally new and write about your experience. It could be a cuisine you’ve heard great things about, an unfamiliar type of music, or an activity you've never tried before. Tell us about it all from the POV of a complete novice.

• Gateway to Gastronomy: Know any fun and easy to follow recipes? Share it in this recurring segment.

• Exploring Edmonton: Do you know any cool places around Edmonton that people should visit? Write about them in this new series!

• Brew Crew/Vino Bitches: A fun, short review of your favourite (or not-so-favourite) beers, wines, or other alcoholic beverages of choice.

• Pot Thots: Write about your favourite strains, equipment, dispensaries, and more in our column on the world of legal weed.

Columns for Those with Hot Takes:

• Diss Track: Are there 3-4 songs that grind your gears in the worst way possible? Diss the crap out of them in this column.

• Retro on Retro: Is some classic piece of media on your mind? Reflect on it with the distance of time in this column. Discuss the qualities, staying power, and impact of your favourite old movie, video game, album, book, play, or whatever else!

• Double Take: Love spitting fire-hot takes on pop culture? You and a friend (or foe) can team up to write opposing takes on some piece of art/entertainment/media.

Tech/Nerdy Columns:

• Paddling up the Livestream: Wax lyrical about your favourite livestreams, put us onto some hidden-away gems, or give your hot-takes on livestream culture!

• DatApp: Have an app that’s been a gamechanger? Wax eloquently about it (or a few of your favourites) in this column.

• Comic Stans: Love comics or graphic novels? This column is for you! Highlight your favourite comics and how they might include representation for women and LGBTQIA2S+ people!
