Hello peeps!
We are almost at the finish line! I wish you the best of luck with all of your exams and please remember to take breaks and sleep a sufficient amount!
Here's some announcements for the next couple of weeks:
We're looking for members of our AntiFreeze team! It's gonna go from Jan 9 to 14. You don't have to come for all of the events. Email Emily ([email protected]) if you're interested.
Here are a few pitches for the upcoming weeks if you would like to take a break from your exams and check out some cool stuff happening in the city!
- Katie :)

Illustration Pitches O_O
Where:
on our print newspaper for the winter semester
When:
What:
preferably any comics about campus current events, political cartoons (which is what we used to do), or just silly things about being in the UofA
Who:
currently for The Gateway volunteers or any current student enrolled in the U of A
We're planning on including two max on our print newspaper, which will be on our newsstands by the start of the winter semester. The remaining submitted comics that won't make the cut are eligible to be published on our site in the same place for the general illustration submissions.
Submission requirements sent to Arthur ([email protected]) and Emily, our Editor-in-Chief ([email protected]):
rough sketch with appropriate comic formatting (at the very least) or a finished comic (preferred)
comic title
brief explanation of the comic (especially if you submit a rough sketch)
art portfolio and blurb about art experience, if you haven't submitted one to Arthur yet
Where:
published on our website
When:
rough draft/s by Jan 5
What:
illustrations accompanying a feature article about the student meals from the First Peoples' House
Who:
currently for The Gateway volunteers or any current student enrolled in the U of A
The feature talks about how the free monthly student meals at the First Nations' House brings the First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) student community on campus together. It also talks about how food plays a significant role in many cultures and the importance of having a space specific for FNMI students from a first-person perspective.
The food mentioned in the feature are stew and bannock, KFC, bannock tacos, fresh fruit, and sandwiches. We're currently in the process of asking for reference photos of the meals so I'll make a follow-up email to send the reference photos your way.
A minimum of 1 illustration is required for the article header but preferably would like to have 2-3 illustrations embedded in the article along with the article header illustration (so total of 3-4 illustrations).
Submission requirements sent to Arthur ([email protected]) and Emily, our Editor-in-Chief ([email protected]):
rough draft/s
illustration title/s
brief explanation of the illustration/s
art portfolio and blurb about art experience, if you haven't submitted one to Arthur yet
Where:
published online
When:
no particular due date, open year-round
What:
illustrations that are not necessarily an accompaniment to any of our written articles
Who:
currently for The Gateway volunteers or any current student enrolled in the U of A
Although our magazine run is cut short, we're currently building up a space on the site to house all your cool artworks. Submissions may include, but are not limited to, illustrations (traditional or digital) and comics.
Submission requirements sent to Arthur ([email protected]) and Emily, our Editor-in-Chief ([email protected]):
.jpg or .png version of your illustration
artwork title
the date when you created said illustration
an artist statement about the artwork
art portfolio and blurb about art experience, if you haven't submitted one to Arthur yet
