Arts and Culture pitches!

Arts pitches and a new podcast from The Gateway!

Nobody:

Me: if you printed off a pitch email and then threw it at someone, would that make it a pitched email?

Hey Arts pals! I hope everyone is keeping their heads above water as we head into another busy midterm season. Stay strong though, only two days until Reading Week!I thought I should keep this week's email pretty light since most of us are fairly busy right now. I have a few pitches of things that I think it would be fun to cover for the site, and also some great stories left over from last week. I also have a few important announcements. If you didn't already know, The Gateway now has a podcast! The show is called The Byliners and it is hosted by yours truly, as well as my fellow editor pals Mitchell, Khadra and Pia. The show is a casual and fun conversation reacting to the biggest headlines in pop-culture and U of A news, with new episodes coming out Monday afternoons. You can learn more by following the link in the bio of The Gateway's Instagram page or you can listen to the debut episode here on Apple Podcasts. Whether you check out the show for the laughs or just to hear what our voices sound like, make sure to subscribe so that you never miss an episode! Also just a quick heads up that there will be no pitch meeting next Monday since it's Reading Week. The pitch email will still go out for all of you that are itching for a story, but even if you can't write anything next week, still check out the pitch email because I have a very special announcement planned. And now, as always, the recurring columns:

Review the new Ariana Grande album!Positions is Ariana Grande's newest album that was released last week on October 30th. The album is already getting positive reviews from critics, and seeing as Ariana Grande is one of the biggest names in anything — not just music — it would be great to review Positions for the site. Let me know if you're interested in taking this one on!

Borat is back...Another release from the past couple weeks that can't be ignored is Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Sasha Baron Cohen's sequel to 2006's Borat. The movie once again finds (fake) Kazakh journalist Borat Sagdiyev on a journey to America, but this time it's set against the backdrop of the 2020 elections and the COVID-19 pandemic. The movie has generated a lot of buzz over the past couple of weeks and it would be awesome if we could review it for the site. Let me know if you have access to Prime Video and are interested in this pitch!

U of A alumni behind popular Harry Potter podcastMarcelle Kosman and Hannah McGregor created the popular Harry Potter podcast Witch, Please while students at the U of A, and since then show has garnered an international fanbase. The podcast went on a hiatus in 2017 and relaunched at the beginning of September 2020 with a podcast network and a mountain of J. K. Rowling controversy to sort through. Let me know if you would like to interview either McGregor or Kosman about their show. You can listen to it here.

A White Lie is the oral history of Madeeha Hafez Albatta, a Palestinian woman who grew up in Gaza, detailing the stories and traditions of Palestinians before and after 1948. The book was also edited by Ghada Ageel, who is a visiting professor of political science at the University of Alberta and a columnist for the Middle East Eye. Let me know if you would like to get access to a complimentary review copy and/or if you would like to interview Albatta.
