What's up, it's pitches o'clock!
Here's another week's worth of Arts & Culture pitches for y'all!!! We have our ongoing columns and some interview and review opportunities. While exams are soon upon us, there's still time to take up a quick story. And of course, feel free to send me your own ideas at
. :)
But before we get to the usual pitches, here's an emergency story:
Stephen Hillenburg
, the creator of
Spongebob Squarepants
,
. If you, like so many of us, grew up watching Spongebob, I hope you'll consider writing a tribute piece to Hillenburg and his work.

With that addressed, here are your regular columns and pitches:
Brew Crew/Vino Bitches: A fun, 150- to 350-word review of your favourite (or not-so-favourite) beer, wine, or other alcoholic beverage of choice.
Noodle Nation: Who loves noodles? You (might) love noodles. Write 450-500 words on your favourite noodle (ramen, pho, other long stringy flour-y food) haunts for this column.
Pot Thots: Write about your favourite strains, equipment, dispensaries, and more in our all-new column on the world of legal weed.
DatApp: Have an app that’s been a game- or life-changer? Wax eloquently about it (or a few of your favourites) in a short 150- to 350-word installment for this column.
Top 5: Top 5 study spots, places to cry in public, late-night post-exam diners...you name it, you can write a Top 5 on it! 50-200 words per Thing In The Top 5.
Diss Track: Are there 3-4 songs that grind your gears in the worst way possible? Diss the crap out of them in this column.
Emoji of the Week: This one’s self-explanatory. Trawl your recently used emojis and sing praise about it and why other people should worship it as The Best Emoji too.
Fashion Streeters: If you love walking up to people and asking them about their cool outfits, this one’s for you. Q & A format. Consider pairing up with a photo volunteer or taking your own pics!
Doin’ You: Everyone has something they do exceptionally well. Wanna teach others your wizardry? Walk us step-by-step through the process of a master for this column.
Playlists: Have killer musical taste? Share it on The Gateway with a curated playlist.
Retro on Retro: Is some classic piece of media on your mind? Reflect on it with the distance of time in this column. Discuss the qualities, staying power, and impact of your favourite old movie, videogame, album, book, play, or whatever else!
...AND MORE! You can also pitch me your own column ideas if you want to write your own or if you've seen any awesome movies or performances/heard any music/read any books/played any games/eaten any food etc., let me know.

Review or preview Matara!
Workshop West Playwrights' Theatre is opening its 40th anniversary season with the world premiere of Conni Massing's Matara, which runs from November 28 to December 8 at The Backstage Theatre (10330 84 Avenue).
Inspired by the real-life elephant Lucy and her life at the Edmonton Valley Zoo, Matara portrays the political struggle over the titular elephant as encroaching floodwaters threaten the small zoo's viability.I'd love for us to do a preview interviewing Massing (a sometime U of A playwriting instructor) about the play, and/or review the opening night.

Preview or review Chorale Saint-Jean's Christmas concert.
Campus Saint-Jean's choir (alongside four other Francophone community choirs) is presenting
Noël en choeur
, an afternoon of music on
Sunday, December 9, 2018, at 2:30 p.m.
at
First Presbyterian Church
(10025 105 Street, Edmonton).
Showcasing 170 voices, the concert will feature traditional songs and ancient French carols as well as modern works. Chorale Saint-Jean is the largest Francophone choir in Western Canada, so this is sure to be LIT.
I think this is really wholesome. :) I'd love for us to do a preview interviewing the choir director or maybe a CSJ student who's singing in the concert. We could also do a review of the concert, and I can secure comps for this purpose.
Since CSJ's largely underrepresented in campus discourse, it would be great for
The Gateway
to write about its events.

Review Built (a design pop-up shop).
The Student Design Association (which represents students in the U of A's design programs) is hosting
Built
, which runs
December 8-22
at
Kingsway Mall
. Built is a pop-up shop featuring products created by U of A design students.
The shop is set up in a usually-vacant retail space, with the student creators themselves working as the sales staff. It gives shoppers a chance to meet the designers of their products, which is pretty rad.
We have a segment of The Gateway Presents (our radio show on CJSR) previewing this year's run of the shop, so I'd like to publish an onsite review or product round-up to follow up.

Profile printmaking master Liz Ingram!
Pitching this out again since I think it's a big deal:
a Professor Emeritus in the U of A Department of Art & Design, has been inducted into the
Order of Canada
! Ingram is a master in the art of printmaking and has had a distinguished career here and worldwide over more than forty years.
I'd love for us to profile Ingram to talk about her career, her artistic practice, and what it means to achieve such high esteem and recognition as an artist.
Let me know if you're interested and we can set up an interview!
