A&C Pitches March 6 (copy 01)

Your Friendly Neighbourhood Pitch Email 💭

What time is it? IT'S ARTS 'N CULTURE PITCHES TIME!

Play it as it lays

Afternoon, everyone. First, some housekeeping. If you did not already hear about this from us, Jonah is no longer working at The Gateway. But in terms of you all, the volunteers, nothing changes. In case you don't know who I am, I'm Victoria, last year's Arts & Culture Editor and this year's Online Editor, and I'll be monitoring this email from now until April 30, 2019.

You can still stop by the office and chat anytime you want, and you can (and definitely should!) continue to write A&C content to your heart's desire. Pitch me anytime if you have stories you think would benefit our A&C section, be it stories on video games, books, comics, movies, music, paintings, or food and drink.

Some other important stuff:

1.

Fill this out! It's your chance to share your thoughts with our editorial team, and the answers will help guide the decisions of next year's staff. It is totally anonymous and will help next year's staff.

2.

Arts & Culture Editor hiring (and other line editor hiring, too):

We'll be posting the job postings for the 2019-20 Arts & Culture, Opinion, and News Editor this coming Wednesday, and the application deadline for all of these is Wednesday, April 3. If you've been thinking you'd like to take up one of these posts, mark your calendars! If you're interested in any of these positions, definitely talk to Andrew McWhinney (current Opinion Editor and next year's Editor-in-Chief) and if you're specifically looking to talk about the Arts & Culture editor position, definitely talk to me.

In terms of pitches, as usual, we have our ongoing columns and some interview and review opportunities. And if you have a pitch of your own, send it my way at

.

Now here are our columns:

  • Lunch Break: A new Arts & Culture series where we share fun recipes with humorous commentary. It's wholesome and lowkey, and personally, I love anything about food, so check it out and send an installment over if you feel so inclined!

  • Brew Crew/Vino Bitches: A fun, 150- to 350-word review of your favourite (or not-so-favourite) beer, wine, or other alcoholic beverage of choice.

  • Noodle Nation: Who loves noodles? You (might) love noodles. Write 450-500 words on your favourite noodle (ramen, pho, other long stringy flour-y food) haunts for this column.

  • Pot Thots: Write about your favourite strains, equipment, dispensaries, and more in our all-new column on the world of legal weed.

  • Eating Edmonton: Write about your favourite (or not-so-favourite) local haunts in this miscellaneous foodie column.

  • Lunch Break: Share your favourite student-friendly recipe with some down-to-earth commentary.

  • DatApp: Have an app that’s been a game- or life-changer? Wax eloquently about it (or a few of your favourites) in a short 150- to 350-word installment for this column.

  • Top 5: Top 5 study spots, places to cry in public, late-night post-exam diners...you name it, you can write a Top 5 on it! 50-200 words per Thing In The Top 5.

  • Diss Track: Are there 3-4 songs that grind your gears in the worst way possible? Diss the crap out of them in this column.

  • Emoji of the Week: This one’s self-explanatory. Trawl your recently used emojis and sing praise about it and why other people should worship it as The Best Emoji too.

  • Fashion Streeters: If you love walking up to people and asking them about their cool outfits, this one’s for you. Q & A format. Consider pairing up with a photo volunteer or taking your own pics!

  • Doin’ You: Everyone has something they do exceptionally well. Wanna teach others your wizardry? Walk us step-by-step through the process of a master for this column.

  • Playlists: Have killer musical taste? Share it on The Gateway with a curated playlist.

  • Retro on Retro: Is some classic piece of media on your mind? Reflect on it with the distance of time in this column. Discuss the qualities, staying power, and impact of your favourite old movie, video game, album, book, play, or whatever else!

  • Double Take: Love spitting fire-hot takes on pop culture? You and a friend (or foe) can team up to write opposing takes on some piece of art/entertainment/media.

  • Social Intercourse: A weekly round-up of cool, local cultural events compiled by Arts & Culture writers.

  • ...AND MORE! You can also pitch me your own column ideas if you want to write your own or if you've seen any awesome movies or performances/heard any music/read any books/played any games/eaten any food etc., let me know.

Showcase Imbumba

The McMullen Gallery (the art gallery in the U of A hospital) and the Keiskamma Art Project (a community-based arts initiative in the village of Hamburg, South Africa) have partnered to present Imbumba, a new exhibition of works depicting the cycles of life in the village and surrounding environs, running March 8 to April 12. Documenting the legacy of apartheid, the HIV/AIDS crisis, and renewal and growth in the area, this exhibition is sure to moving and compelling. I think it's worth an interview with the artists or curators, or a review of some sort.

Review a thing

I'm someone who likes shock value, and not just normal shock value, but sHoCk VaLuE. So, I've been playing around with album and food and concert and etc. reviews that have different formats: think an informal conversation with a friend, or a bunch of bullet points, or a timestamped set of experiences. So, if you want to review something, what I'm telling you is to get experimental. Play with form and get creative. Have fun! Don't feel confined to full paragraphs or even full sentences.
