February: where'd it go???
Hey Arts & Culture gamers, gals, and non-binary pals!
Before pitches, I have a couple housekeeping items:
1.
. Fill this out! It's your chance to share your thoughts with our editorial team, and the answers will help guide the decisions of next year's staff. Super important!!! Seriously, we'd love to hear your comments, queries, roasts, etc.
2.
. If you're interested in applying for a job at The Gateway this year--or even if you aren't YET--I encourage you to come to this info session on Friday at 5:00 p.m. to hear about the work opportunities up on the 3rd floor of SUB.
3. New column: Lunch Break. Our food writer extraordinaire Pauline Chan has just drafted the inaugural installment of Lunch Break, a new Arts & Culture series where we share fun recipes with humorous commentary. It's wholesome and lowkey, so I hope other writers get in on the fun!
Now for pitches! As usual, we have our ongoing columns and some interview and review opportunities. And if you have a pitch of your own, send it my way at
.

Now here are our columns:
Brew Crew/Vino Bitches: A fun, 150- to 350-word review of your favourite (or not-so-favourite) beer, wine, or other alcoholic beverage of choice.
Noodle Nation: Who loves noodles? You (might) love noodles. Write 450-500 words on your favourite noodle (ramen, pho, other long stringy flour-y food) haunts for this column.
Pot Thots: Write about your favourite strains, equipment, dispensaries, and more in our all-new column on the world of legal weed.
Eating Edmonton: Write about your favourite (or not-so-favourite) local haunts in this miscellaneous foodie column.
Lunch Break: Share your favourite student-friendly recipe with some down-to-earth commentary.
DatApp: Have an app that’s been a game- or life-changer? Wax eloquently about it (or a few of your favourites) in a short 150- to 350-word installment for this column.
Top 5: Top 5 study spots, places to cry in public, late-night post-exam diners...you name it, you can write a Top 5 on it! 50-200 words per Thing In The Top 5.
Diss Track: Are there 3-4 songs that grind your gears in the worst way possible? Diss the crap out of them in this column.
Emoji of the Week: This one’s self-explanatory. Trawl your recently used emojis and sing praise about it and why other people should worship it as The Best Emoji too.
Fashion Streeters: If you love walking up to people and asking them about their cool outfits, this one’s for you. Q & A format. Consider pairing up with a photo volunteer or taking your own pics!
Doin’ You: Everyone has something they do exceptionally well. Wanna teach others your wizardry? Walk us step-by-step through the process of a master for this column.
Playlists: Have killer musical taste? Share it on The Gateway with a curated playlist.
Retro on Retro: Is some classic piece of media on your mind? Reflect on it with the distance of time in this column. Discuss the qualities, staying power, and impact of your favourite old movie, video game, album, book, play, or whatever else!
Double Take: Love spitting fire-hot takes on pop culture? You and a friend (or foe) can team up to write opposing takes on some piece of art/entertainment/media.
Social Intercourse: A weekly round-up of cool, local cultural events compiled by Arts & Culture writers.
...AND MORE! You can also pitch me your own column ideas if you want to write your own or if you've seen any awesome movies or performances/heard any music/read any books/played any games/eaten any food etc., let me know.

Showcase Imbumba.
The McMullen Gallery (the art gallery in the U of A hospital) and the Keiskamma Art Project (a community-based arts initiative in the village of Hamburg, South Africa) have partnered to present Imbumba, a new exhibition of works depicting the cycles of life in the village and surrounding environs, running March 8 to April 12. Documenting the legacy of apartheid, the HIV/AIDS crisis, and renewal and growth in the area, this exhibition is sure to moving and compelling. I think it's worth an interview with the artists or curators, or a review of some sort.

Profile the Glass Bookshop start-up campaign.
Matthew Stepanic (pictured left on desktop/above on mobile) and Jason Purcell, two Edmonton-based writer-editors and U of A alumni, have launched a fundraising campaign to open a new independent book store in Edmonton! The store will focus on Canadian, local, and queer writing. This is an opportunity to do a wholesome local story, so I encourage you to interview Stepanic and Purcell about their project!

Preview the SkirtsAfire Festival.
The
, an annual celebration of women artists in Edmonton, is running March 7-17 at various venues downtown and around Alberta Avenue. There are loads of event we could review or artists we could interview. To kick things off, I'd suggest interviewing the festival organizers and writing up a preview.

Preview the 2019/20 Studio Theatre season.
The Department of Drama has just announced next year's Studio Theatre season, which promises a mix of classics and new works. Write a commentary piece giving your thoughts on the plays chosen, or interview Chair of Drama, Melanie Dreyer-Lude, about the choices.

Review songwriter Danielle Knibbe's new album.
Edmonton-native songwriter Danielle Knibbe has just released her new album, The Ribcage & the Heart. Since this is an up-and-coming local artist, I'd say it's definitely worth a review--or even an interview with Knibbe herself!
