A&C Pitches - Jan. 29

Welcome to the pitches zone

What time is it? IT'S ARTS 'N CULTURE PITCHES TIME!

If I controlled Rewind, there'd be pitches...

Hello my fellow Campus Albertans,

As usual, I'll start with a few announcements:

1.

CJSR

(the U of A's campus and community radio station) is hosting a round of

volunteer news training

on February 2 and 9. It's a valuable opportunity to learn how to operate recording equipment, conduct interviews, and edit audio. If you're interested in working on our radio show,

The Gateway Presents

, this is a must-do. Create a volunteer profile and sign up

!

2. I'm hosting a

party

for all Gateway staff, volunteers, board members, and alumni at my place on Friday! The party starts at 8:00 p.m., and we'll have food, drinks, Wii U, and fun times all around. Email or message me for the address and an invite to the Facebook event. I hope to see you all there!

3. As I've mentioned in the past few weeks,

The Gateway's

hiring

will be coming up sooner than you can say, "Wow, hiring!" So, if you're interested my job (or any other job on staff), I'd love to sit down with you to chat about it.

4. I'd like to open up my schedule next week for some o

ne-on-one meetings

with all of you. So, if you'd like to check in on your volunteering progress, get feedback on your work, and talk about your future at

The Gateway

(ahem, the above), I hope you'll consider booking a quick meeting. Pick a time in this

. If no times work for you, email me to arrange a different meeting time.

Now for pitches! As usual, we have our ongoing columns and some interview and review opportunities. And if you have a pitch of your own, send it my way at

.

- Jonah "GovWeek Apologist" Dunch

Now here are our columns:

  • Brew Crew/Vino Bitches: A fun, 150- to 350-word review of your favourite (or not-so-favourite) beer, wine, or other alcoholic beverage of choice.

  • Noodle Nation: Who loves noodles? You (might) love noodles. Write 450-500 words on your favourite noodle (ramen, pho, other long stringy flour-y food) haunts for this column.

  • Pot Thots: Write about your favourite strains, equipment, dispensaries, and more in our all-new column on the world of legal weed.

  • Eating Edmonton: Write about your favourite (or not-so-favourite) local haunts in this miscellaneous foodie column.

  • DatApp: Have an app that’s been a game- or life-changer? Wax eloquently about it (or a few of your favourites) in a short 150- to 350-word installment for this column.

  • Top 5: Top 5 study spots, places to cry in public, late-night post-exam diners...you name it, you can write a Top 5 on it! 50-200 words per Thing In The Top 5.

  • Diss Track: Are there 3-4 songs that grind your gears in the worst way possible? Diss the crap out of them in this column.

  • Emoji of the Week: This one’s self-explanatory. Trawl your recently used emojis and sing praise about it and why other people should worship it as The Best Emoji too.

  • Fashion Streeters: If you love walking up to people and asking them about their cool outfits, this one’s for you. Q & A format. Consider pairing up with a photo volunteer or taking your own pics!

  • Doin’ You: Everyone has something they do exceptionally well. Wanna teach others your wizardry? Walk us step-by-step through the process of a master for this column.

  • Playlists: Have killer musical taste? Share it on The Gateway with a curated playlist.

  • Retro on Retro: Is some classic piece of media on your mind? Reflect on it with the distance of time in this column. Discuss the qualities, staying power, and impact of your favourite old movie, videogame, album, book, play, or whatever else!

  • Double Take: Love spitting fire-hot takes on pop culture? You and a friend (or foe) can team up to write opposing takes on some piece of art/entertainment/media.

  • Social Intercourse: A weekly round-up of cool, local cultural events compiled by Arts & Culture writers.

  • ...AND MORE! You can also pitch me your own column ideas if you want to write your own or if you've seen any awesome movies or performances/heard any music/read any books/played any games/eaten any food etc., let me know.

Check out the new FAB Gallery exhibitions!

We've got two new exhibitions in the FAB Gallery until February 16: The Art of the Book and the Alcuin Awards for Book Design in Canada 2017. Both exhibitions showcase the craft of book design (which I just found out is a Thing). It could be cool to interview the gallery curator to comment on the featured book designs; this could be the basis for a solid "guide to the gallery" with accompanying photos.

Preview or review clarinetist James Campbell's concert!

On February 1 at 7:30 p.m., esteemed Canadian clarinetist James Campbell will be in concert with guests in Convocation Hall.Campbell is lowkey a big deal--he's been honoured with the Order of Canada for his accomplishments in music. As usual, we could do an interview with Campbell to preview the concert and/or a review of the concert itself.

Preview Repurposed: Digital Art and Activism

The Department of Women's and Gender Studies is hosting

called Repurposed: Digital Art and Activism on February 5, 4-6 p.m., in Assiniboia Hall 1-02.

The only

about the event I could find is that there will be "various artists" and "short talks from two of the artists."

While that's not a lot to go on, WGS has a longstanding history of informative and inspiring events. If you're intrigued, you could interview the organizers to find out more.

Write up a Top 5: Things on Facebook Marketplace

Here's a repeat from my last round of pitches: Jake had the idea of someone writing about the Top 5 things they can find on Facebook Marketplace. He welcomed me to shop the pitch around. This would be a nice, quick-and-dirty piece for a new or lapsed volunteer who'd like to get their feet wet.

Predict the Oscar winners.

The Oscar nominations were announced on January 22nd, and two volunteers wrote well-thought-out (and largely accurate) predictions. If anyone wants to publicize their expert predictions on who the winners will be (with backing), I'm all ears!
