Arts & Culture pitches before the final stretch!

What time is it? IT'S ARTS 'N CULTURE PITCHES TIME!

YEET, how we doing for the final stretch?

I'm glad you asked, header. I'm doing just swell! Tis the season to be jolly, but also to write term papers and exams. What better way to find occassional reprieve from crunch time than to write up a quick story for The Gateway's Arts & Culture section? (Hint: there is no better way.)

Scroll down for our

ongoing columns

as well as some

fun, quick-and-dirty pitches

for the pre-holiday season. And if you have an idea of your own, hit me up at [email protected]. :)

And don't forget to show up to classes this week--and more importantly,

stop by The Gateway's offices on the 3rd floor of SUB for my next volunteer meeting at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 20

! I'll be pitching out even more of these neat stories, so be sure to come by for a brief respite from your afternoon study sesh.

- Jonah, your friendly neighbourhood Arts & Culture Editor

  • Brew Crew/Vino Bitches: A fun, 150- to 350-word review of your favourite (or not-so-favourite) beer, wine, or other alcoholic beverage of choice.

  • Noodle Nation: Who loves noodles? You (might) love noodles. Write 450-500 words on your favourite noodle (ramen, pho, other long stringy flour-y food) haunts for this column.

  • Pot Thots: Write about your favourite strains, equipment, dispensaries, and more in our all-new column on the world of legal weed.

  • Top 5: Top 5 study spots, places to cry in public, late-night post-exam diners...you name it, you can write a Top 5 on it! 50-200 words per Thing In The Top 5.

  • Diss Track: Are there 3-4 songs that grind your gears in the worst way possible? Diss the crap out of them in this column.

  • Emoji of the Week: This one’s self-explanatory. Trawl your recently used emojis and sing praise about it and why other people should worship it as The Best Emoji too.

  • Fashion Streeters: If you love walking up to people and asking them about their cool outfits, this one’s for you. Q & A format. Consider pairing up with a photo volunteer or taking your own pics!

  • Doin’ You: Everyone has something they do exceptionally well. Wanna teach others your wizardry? Walk us step-by-step through the process of a master for this column.

  • Playlists: Have killer musical taste? Share it on The Gateway with a curated playlist.

  • Retro on Retro: Is some classic piece of media on your mind? Reflect on it with the distance of time in this column. Discuss the qualities, staying power, and impact of your favourite old movie, videogame, album, book, play, or whatever else!

  • ...AND MORE! You can also pitch me your own column ideas if you want to write your own or if you've seen any awesome movies or performances/heard any music/read any books/played any games/eaten any food etc., let me know.

Review Drew Hayden Taylor's Lougheed College Lecture.

Indigenous author

Drew Hayden Taylor

is speaking about "The Changing Face of Storytelling in the Indigenous 21st World" at

5:30-6:45 p.m. on November 19 in Room 150 of the Telus Centre

. DHT is an interesting guy, so this could be fun to review. This could run around 300-450 words.

Here's a teaser:

"We have gone from telling stories around the campfire and kitchen tables to the stage, the page, the screen and ways our Elders could not have imagined. Still, it’s storytelling. I will explore my journey from my grandfather's bonfire to today's multi-media approach to weaving tales. It's an unexpected sojourn of adventure and humour."

Review or interview artists about new FAB Gallery exhibitions.

We've got two new exhibitions in the FAB Gallery:- Painting in the State of Exception: Documents of Contemporary War- 50 Years Rat Free: An Exhibit of New Alberta ContemporariesThe former is a collection of paintings based on photographs Professor Allen Ball took in contemporary war zones. The latter is a group exhibition of new work by Department of Art & Design graduate students.Review the exhibitions or interview the artists to get an inside look! Review: 300-450 words, interview: 450-550.

Album Review: Humans's Going Late

Vancouver indie electronic duo Humans released their third full-length album

Going Late

on Friday, November 16. It’s the follow-up to

Noontide

, which earned them a Juno nomination for Electronic Album of the Year. If this sounds like it's up your alley, then write a review of it! This can be as short as 350-450 words.

Review Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley at the Citadel Theatre

We have two free tickets to this show on November 22! It's an imagined sequel to Jane Austen's

Pride and Prejudice

in which the *other* Bennet sister, Mary, finds love thanks to the magic of the Christmas season. If you're up for big sentimental moods, then take a brain break and enjoy (or hate-love) this play for about two hours and 300-450 words.

Here's an even smaller idea!

Janet Rogers, the Department of English and Film Studies's Writer-in-Residence, is hosting this event at

6-9 p.m. on Friday, November 23, 2018 in the Telus Centre Atrium

. It's a showcase of Black and Indigenous writer-performers from the Edmonton area. Interview Rogers ahead of time to preview the event, or go and review it! Review: 300-450 words, interview: 450-550.
